Hot Issues
Please ask your Congressional Representative to Co-Sponsor the Following Bills:
H.R. 5110 [Social Security Customer Service Improvement Act] – Provides Congress with additional oversight in staffing levels, office closures and SSA budget estimates. Would require the Social Security Administration to offer justification before closing a SSA office. Addresses the concerns of SSA field office employees who know first-hand how a lack of sufficient funding in SSA is adversely affecting their ability to serve tax payers efficiently.
H.R. 4089 – Amends Title 38 of the U.S. Code to improve the collective bargaining rights (and procedures for review of adverse action) of medical professionals (i.e., physicians, dentists, RNs, physician assistants, and others) who work at VA facilities.
H.R. 1890 – Prevents the federal government from housing, safeguarding, protecting, and disciplining federal prisoners in private prisons; and prohibits state and local governments from using federal funds to contract with private companies for the provision of these correctional services.
Other Issues of Importance:
Pay Raise -- AFGE is seeking salary adjustments of 4.4% for 2009, rather than the 2.9% proposed in the Administration’s FY 09 budget. PLEASE ASK YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT A 4.4% INCREASE IN 2009.
Bureau of Prisons – The serious prison inmate overcrowding and correctional officer understaffing that plague the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) system are creating dangerous conditions for federal prison inmates, federal correctional officers, staff employees, and the local communities in which they work. PLEASE ASK YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT A $500 MILLION INCREASE IN FY2009 FUNDING FOR THE BUREAU OF PRISONS TO INCREASE FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICER STAFFING LEVELS AT BOP PRISONS.
